The Wonderful Wildlife of Halong Bay

Halong Bay in the north east of Vietnam has become synonymous with scenic beauty and geographical magnificence. This six hundred square mile paradise is quite simply one of the most beautiful places on earth. People arrive here in their thousands every year to experience the beauty. Most come in the form of cruise boat passengers, spending two or three days on one of the luxury cruise boats that operate in the bay. It is a wonderful way to witness what nature has create here.

Whilst enjoying the fantastic views and marvelling at the millions of years old karst limestone rock features, if would be easy to miss out on one of the bays best kept secrets. For here, the wildlife has developed over the years and presents a rich diversity of fauna that even the casual viewer can appreciate. Most of the karst islands are completely uninhabited and covered in lush greenery. This of course provides seclusion and cover for the shyest of creatures.

Of course The waters of the bay are fully stocked with an abundance of fish, octopus, crabs, and many oysters, prawns and shrimps. At certain times of the year, jelly fish can become a bit of a nuisance. The small creatures do not have a serious sting, but their quantity can certainly put swimmers off their stroke.

Birdlife here is magnificent, with hawks, hornbills and cuckoos, particularly in Cat Ba National Park. The sight of Sea Eagles fishing in Halong Bay is a common one. These superb creatures soar effortlessly on the thermal currents before swooping down to catch a fish. It is on Cat Ba Island though that one very special animal resides. The extremely rare Cat Ba Langur is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. It’s numbers dropped down below 70 individuals, though a combination of conservation measures have seen the numbers rising again. It is now know that there are over 100 individuals within the National Park.

Monkeys are in abundance on many of the islands and one of their more unusual habitats is within the Sung Sot Cave. The cave is called the Surprise Cave and it certainly provides a few. Deep within the grotto there is an underground lake and a crop of trees. It is not unusual to see a group of monkeys feeding here.

The wildlife is everywhere if you look for it. Lizards and frogs are found in large numbers throughout the bay. Most people miss out on seeing an awful lot of the wildlife here. However, with a little bit of effort you will get the chance to see and maybe photograph some of the most amazing creatures, you are ever likely to come across.
